How BMI is calculated is nothing more than mathematical snake oil disguised as some magical formula. Even the good Dr. Jekyll could easily expose its duality.
We know the reasons it could not and should not be used as an indicator of our level of fatness. Knowing that bone is denser than muscle and twice as dense as fat, BMI makes no allowances for those relative proportions of bone, muscle and fat in our body.
Curiously, an athlete with strong bones, good muscle tone and low fat will have a high BMI.
And so, it draws precisely the wrong conclusions for the largest and fastest growing segment of today's population. The lean, fit and healthy - namely, the vast majority of those athletes in our own community!
Is there a better tool?
“It is one thing to mortify curiosity, another to conquer it. ”
